What to Expect When Visiting The World’s Largest Kaleidoscope

February 6, 2026

If you’re looking for something memorable to do in the Catskills when the weather keeps you indoors, this unassuming grain silo holds more than meets the eye.

The World’s Largest Kaleidoscope is one of those places you don’t expect to find, and won’t forget once you do. Located within The Shops at Emerson, it’s family-friendly and fully indoors, offering a creative way to spend a winter afternoon.

Housed inside a 60-foot-tall former grain silo, the Kaleidoscope transforms moving images into shifting patterns of color, shape, and light that fill the space overhead. Below, learn about the history of this Catskills landmark and what to expect during your visit.

The History of the World Record

The Catskills region has long attracted artists, musicians, and experimenters. The Kaleidoscope is a natural progression of that spirit. The structure that holds the Kaleidoscope was originally a working grain silo at Riseley Flats Farm. In the 1990s, it was reimagined by renowned kaleidoscope artist Charles Karadimos, and in 1997, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest.

How It Works

Instead of peering into a handheld tube, visitors stand beneath a massive mirror system and look straight up.

Those mirrors are an engineering feat on their own. They measure 37½ feet long, weigh about 5,000 pounds, and were built on site, then lifted into place using a 100-foot crane. Three mirrors come together to form a perfect sphere when viewed from below, creating seamless symmetry on a monumental scale.

Rather than beads or bits of glass, the Kaleidoscope uses original video art projected through a custom lens system. This keeps the classic kaleidoscopic effect intact while allowing the visuals to change over time, shift with seasons, and reflect new artistic ideas.

Inside the Kaleidoshow

What happens inside the Kaleidoscope? A swirling show of color and light, accompanied by music. Visitors can enjoy the experience from one of the upright seats, or, when space allows, lie on the floor for an even more immersive view.

The original Kaleidoshows were conceived by psychedelic art pioneer Isaac Abrams and his son Raphael Abrams, an early computer artist. Composer Gary Burke created the accompanying musical score, adding a surround-sound layer that helped turn the Kaleidoscope into a fully immersive experience.

Each Kaleidoshow is designed specifically for the scale and acoustics of the silo. Over the years, the shows have evolved.

The most recent show, The Earth Laughs in Flowers, takes inspiration from the flowers and plant life found on the surrounding grounds. Created by artists Posie Strenz, Jonas Finkel, and Liz Appelson, the show is a nod to Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose essay Nature helped inspire the creation of the Catskill Forest Preserve. The imagery feels playful and grounded at the same time, familiar forms turning abstract as they unfold overhead.

Shows rotate throughout the year, so repeat visits often bring something new.

A Stop at the Kaleidostore

After the show, many visitors continue on to the Kaleidostore, which is also located within The Shops at Emerson. It’s a great indoor shopping experience, especially welcome in colder weather. There, you’ll find normal-sized kaleidoscopes to bring home, alongside artist-signed and collector pieces.

The shelves are filled with chimes, puzzles, games, gems, crystals, and other curiosity-inspired gifts (and yes, it’s just as appealing to adults as it is to kids!).
