Join us for a fun day of reading, writing, and creating!
Picture book author and illustrator Nancy Scofield Stewart will read a few of her books, including Little Fred and Big Jake and The ABC’s of the Erie Canal. As a retired kindergarten teacher, it is Nancy’s goal to enhance children’s literacy through awareness and help them actively enjoy the art of reading and listening to storybooks.
Each story will welcome the audience to express themselves: to be heard, seen, and give them the ability to listen to others’ ideas. Nancy will also demonstrate some techniques in illustration that children may want to explore themselves.
About the Author
At the age of four, Nancy Scofield Stewart developed her love of art while sitting on a stool in her grandfather’s workshop, watching him create sketches of old-time characters. Under his influence, she knew art would always be a part of her life. She went on to study fine art and education, earning a Bachelors Degree in the arts and then, a Master’s Degree in education. Illustration became a driving force in all her daily life experiences. Each walk in nature prompted an idea for a story, accompanied by rough sketches.
Her experience as a kindergarten teacher further cemented her love of creating books that would bring joy to children. She spent many years on the floor of her kindergarten classroom, each year, instilling a love of books in a class full of eager five-year-olds. All the while, she created an “idea sketch book” for future stories.
Nancy Scofield Stewart is the published author and illustrator of one book so far, Little Fred and Big Jake. She is the illustrator of two additional books, The ABC’s of the Erie Canal by Joseph R. Zupan, and, Lily the Ladybug Lifeguard by Allison Zeinoun Ferrier, with more in the works. She enjoys traveling the country and a little bit of Europe with her family, hiking National treasures, experiencing marvelous adventures, and often silly mishaps.
