What Is the Olana Historic Site?

A little less than an hour away from our Catskills resort in Hudson is Olana State Historic Site. These grounds and buildings were once home to Frederic and Isabel Church. Frederic was a well-known painter, world traveler, self-taught architect, and more. He purchased 126 acres of farmland on a hillside just south of Hudson. In 1866, the family purchased an additional 18 acres of land.

This site would earn the name Olana after several years of simply being called “the Farm.” Isabel is credited with originating the name. The family, which had four children, had several distinguished guests visit them at this home, including Robert and Emily de Forest and Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain.

What to See on Your Visit

It’s free to enter the 250-acre landscape, and this spot is open every day from 8 a.m. to sunset. There is plenty to discover as you wander this picturesque estate, including:

  • Visitor Center, which is located in what used to be the stable, coach-house and coachman’s quarters
  • The original family home built in 1960
  • Barns
  • The studio, which was demolished in 1888

There are also several interpretive signs throughout the grounds that help tell the story of this home and property.
