There’s nothing like autumn in New York, and the season moves quickly. Whether you’re traveling from far away or a local exploring your region, a little extra planning can help you get more out of your fall adventures. Here are our favorite local tips for experiencing fall upstate, followed by a three-night Catskills itinerary you can borrow for a peaceful midweek escape.
Fall foliage is one of the main attractions for travelers to New York. The first bursts of color in the trees can appear in early September, then before you know it, entire landscapes are painted in gold, orange, and red.
Remember that “upstate” New York covers a lot of ground, and peak colors come and go at different times depending on where you’re headed.
I Love New York publishes an annual Fall Foliage Report that tracks changing conditions throughout the state. Since temperatures and rainfall vary from year to year, the timing of peak fall color in each area can change as well.
Elevation also impacts the timing of peak foliage. Here in the Catskills, the higher mountain slopes often hit their peak color while the valleys below are still quite green. Consider whether you’re seeking vivid mountaintops or bright colors at eye level when choosing your travel dates.
Autumn weekends draw plenty of travelers to the region. If you’re looking for a peaceful experience in nature, a quiet midweek getaway makes it easier.
Hiking trails tend to be less crowded, scenic drives are easier to enjoy with reduced traffic, and you’ll have more room to wander small town sidewalks. You may also find weekday offers and specials at hotels in the area.
For Catskills and Hudson Valley locals, a midweek day trip offers an immediate escape into the natural beauty of the region, without needing to take much time off. Residents of Ulster, Greene, Dutchess, and Delaware County can take advantage of Locals Day here at The Emerson on Thursdays, and enjoy 20% off eligible shopping, dining, and spa treatments with valid ID. (Exclusions apply)
Your fall road trip deserves a better view than a line of brake lights. Major highways like I-87 can become busy during the peak foliage season, especially on weekends. Schedule time to veer away from the main routes, slow down, and take in the scenery.
Country roads will often bring you past forests of fall colors, rushing creeks, and farms dotted with horses and cows. Route your GPS towards a small town around the halfway point of your drive, and you might be surprised by the views. A stop for coffee and a walk will also break up a long drive and give you a chance to stretch your legs.
Throughout New York State, you’ll find plenty of curiosities worth pulling over for.
Cool air and colorful leaves make fall one of the most rewarding times to hike, but conditions can change rapidly this time of year.
Look up the trails on your itinerary before setting out, so you’re prepared for the distance and elevation gain. Keep sunset time in mind so you’re not stranded in the dark and note that some trails are very strict about not wandering off the main path. Pack appropriately, leave no trace, and keep in mind wet leaves can make your hike extra slippery.
Ticks remain active throughout the fall in New York, until temperatures consistently drop below freezing. Take a few minutes to check yourself, children, and pets after spending time outdoors. Wear tight layers to keep them on your clothes, not your skin, and consider bringing repellent.
For Catskills and Hudson Valley visitors, we often recommend the Ashokan Rail Trail for an easy walk or bike ride. The wide trail follows the Ashokan Reservoir for 11.5 miles and offers striking mountain views, especially in autumn. The path is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome. Download our map of the trail to plan your adventure.
The Ashokan Reservoir is also a great destination for birdwatching. Emerson Resort guests can borrow binoculars from our Front Desk.

Iconic autumn flavors like apple and pumpkin just taste better when they were grown and picked locally. Fresh apple cider doughnuts from an orchard are an Upstate NY specialty not to be missed. We recommend a stop at Kelder’s Farm in Kerhonkson if you’re exploring the Catskills and Hudson Valley: in addition to cider donuts, you can enjoy pick-your-own produce, a petting zoo, mini-golf, and more.
You’ll also find a wide variety of local beer and hard cider throughout the state. Stop at a brewery or cider house to try seasonal varieties that might be harder to find in a store. Pumpkin beer with a cinnamon-sugar rim is an autumn favorite at bars and restaurants throughout the region.
Nothing beats ending your autumn day around a fire. The heat feels even better on a cold night, and the bugs of summer are long gone.
At The Emerson, overnight guests can gather around the fire pit on Friday and Saturday evenings, weather permitting. S’mores kits are available at the Front Desk for $7, giving you everything you need for a sweet ending to a crisp Catskills day.
Stay for a few peaceful weekdays at The Emerson and experience the Catskill Mountains without filling every hour. For Fall 2026, our Autumn Explore & Restore package will help you make the most of a midweek stay. Borrow this itinerary for a relaxed upstate experience at the resort, with time for both adventure and relaxation.
Build an extra hour or two into your travel time to venture off the beaten path on your way to the Catskills. We recommend a quick stop before checking in at the Catskill Visitor Center, where a quick quarter-mile walk leads you to the Upper Esopus Fire Tower. Climb the staircase 80 feet up for a sweeping birds-eye view of the changing leaves.
Whether you chose the Catskills for hiking, antiquing, or simply the fall foliage, give yourself a full day to follow your interests. Leave some space in your day to stop at an unexpected overlook or roadside farm stand.
If you prefer to stay close to your room, you don’t have to go far to spend time outdoors. Walk or bike the trails around The Emerson Resort, including the Brookside Wander, and take in the changing landscape along Esopus Creek.
After a day of exploration, turn your attention to tired muscles at our award-winning spa. We recommend reserving your appointments in advance for the best availability, by calling the Spa Desk or booking online. Try this restorative itinerary if you have a big hike planned the day prior:
Begin with a luxurious shower in the locker room and a meditative moment in the sauna or steam room. Reserve a Reflexology treatment to give hardworking feet some attention after the previous day’s walks, then take a break in the outdoor hot tub with mountain, creek, and fall foliage views.
Book a massage with your preferred amount of pressure to relieve tension throughout the body. Add our Intensive Cooling Leg & Foot Gel Spa Enhancement to help reduce fatigue and swelling in these areas. For extra pampering, finish with a pedicure.
Keep the agenda simple for your last day. After checking out, visit The Shops at Emerson for a souvenir or gift to remember your fall trip by. Browse the restored dairy barn for Catskills keepsakes, clothing, home goods, and local finds, and don’t miss a show inside the World’s Largest Kaleidoscope. On your drive home, stop for lunch and a Main Street walk in one of the area’s charming small towns to extend your fall vacation a few hours longer.
Autumn upstate will come and go before you know it. Experience fall like a local and spend a few days slowing down at The Emerson, with time to take in the full beauty of the season.
Plan your escape to The Emerson and enjoy a classic Catskills experience. Whether you’re seeking wellness, adventure, or simply a change of scenery, your perfect reset starts here.
