Fall in the Catskills is nothing short of spectacular. Crisp air, perfect weather, and forested hills painted with fiery reds, burnt oranges, and vibrant yellows—it’s the kind of beauty that invites you to slow down and savor the season. If you’re seeking a leaf peeping daytrip or overnighter, The Emerson is your perfect home base for an autumn getaway.
Here are some not-to-miss autumn highlights, both at The Emerson and beyond:
Begin your autumn adventure with a walk along the Esopus Creek and through open meadows and woodland areas. Learn about native plant species, pollinating meadows, and stream-side ecology on a stroll through our Brookside Wander protected environment. These easily accessible walking paths are some of the best ways to take in the foliage without leaving the resort property. See our guide and map here.
Birdwatching is a meditative way to get outside and take in the sights and sounds of autumn. Bring your binoculars and enjoy the quiet thrill of seeing warblers, hawks, and other seasonal visitors. Our helpful birding guide is available here.

Just over a five-minute drive from The Emerson, Rail Explorers offers a one-of-a-kind experience riding open-air rail bikes along historic tracks next to the Esopus Creek. The views are stunning year-round, but during peak foliage season, this ride becomes something truly special. It’s a relaxed, scenic way to enjoy the crisp air and colorful trees.
A no-brainer stop for any leaf peeping adventure, located about 45 minutes from The Emerson, Minnewaska is a gorgeous state park year-round, but especially in autumn. The park features dramatic cliffs, clear mountain lakes, and miles of trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes. In autumn, the views from the cliffs above Lake Minnewaska are absolutely breathtaking.
After a day of exploring, a crisp drink hits the spot. Our guide to local makers can help you find the perfect place to relax and enjoy delicious brews. The Catskills offer every vibe from casual taprooms to hillside vineyards to distilleries.

Take a stroll through one of the many charming towns in the area. Woodstock, Phoenicia, and Tannersville each offer their own quaint vibe to explore. Enjoy the changing foliage while popping into gift shops and galleries or grab a warm drink at a local café and take in the cozy, laid-back atmosphere that makes Catskills towns especially inviting in the fall.
On Friday and Saturday evenings (weather permitting), hotel guests can wind down under the stars at our campfire (located in the activities field). S’mores kits are available at the Front Desk for $5. Check out our stargazing map.
We’d love to welcome you. Plan your escape to The Emerson and experience the Catskills at your pace. Whether you’re seeking wellness, adventure, or simply a change of scenery, your perfect reset starts here.
